Census workers have begun going door-to-door to count residents who have not yet responded to the 2020 Census. The U.S. Census Bureau has begun door-to-door canvassing to count residents who have not yet responded to the 2020 Census questionnaire. It is important for residents to know that they may be visited by a Census worker in the coming weeks if they have not already responded to the Census. The best way to avoid a visit by a Census worker is to complete the Census online.
Census takers come from our local community and undergo a background check before being hired. However it is important for residents to determine the legitimacy of the Census taker by verifying the following:
The Census taker is wearing an ID badge that includes the census taker’s name, photograph, a Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Census taker will be wearing a mask. Please wear a mask when speaking with the Census taker. The Census taker will have an official bag and Census Bureau-issued electronic device, such as a laptop or smartphone, bearing the Census Bureau logo. Census takers and field representatives will conduct their work between the hours of 9am and 9pm, local time.
The door-to-door canvassing effort occurs across the nation toward the end of the Census self-response period and helps boost response rates in communities with an undercount. The canvassing effort is particularly important for Broward County as self-response rates here are just under 60%, lower than both the state and national response rates.
Response rates are low in many communities across Broward County, including those with high populations of Spanish- and Creole-speaking residents who may not be aware that the Census can be completed in numerous languages, online or over the phone.
An undercount can result in the loss of millions of dollars in federal and state funding for local programs over the next 10 years that impact all our lives, from newborns to seniors, and everyone in between. That includes funding for social services, transportation, hospitals, nursing homes, education and emergency services, including those that help us deal with crises like COVID-19 and hurricanes.
The United States Constitution requires that every 10 years a count, or census, is taken of America’s population. Census Day was April 1st 2020, the day used to count every person living in the United States of America and in the U.S. territories. While April 1st has come and gone, you can still participate in Census 2020 at https://my2020census.gov/. If you have not already responded to the 2020 Census, please do so today! The deadline to participate is September 30, 2020.

The Florida Department of Health in Broward County has confirmed a locally acquired case of West Nile Virus. As a direct response, the Broward County Mosquito Control Section is spraying organic larvicide as part of an integrated pest management approach that also includes public outreach, adulticide application and setting mosquito traps. Residents and business owners are encouraged to survey their properties frequently to remove any standing water in common mosquito habitats such as buckets, tires, planters, bird baths and fountains. By reducing the number of mosquito breeding habitats, residents will reduce the number of adult mosquitoes that could otherwise transmit diseases.
Residents experiencing mosquito problems can request service by calling 311 or by completing the online Mosquito Service Request Form.

Important Notice Regarding Impacts to Solid Waste, Recycling and Commingled CollectionsCity of Hollywood solid waste and commingled collections vendor, Waste Pro USA, has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Several WastePro crew members have tested positive for COVID-19 and have been under quarantine, which has resulted in service impacts City-wide. Until further notice, customers may experience temporary delays in recycling and commingled (Bulk & Yard Waste) collections.
The City of Hollywood Department of Public Works would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding during these unusual circumstances. Staff will continue to monitor the situation as they work to ensure service collections, with their primary focus on weekly garbage collections. This focus is to maintain the health, safety and sanitation of our community.
Based on the impacts of COVID-19, in the near future, the City may need to suspend services such as recycling and commingled collection. If staffing level impacts necessitate a reduction in services, residents will be notified via the City’s website, on the City’s social media sites and through the Notify Me “News and Announcements” alert. Due to the indiscriminate and deadly nature of the virus, and its ease of community spread, special attention to the health and safety of crew members and our community is paramount. Your patience and understanding is appreciated at this time. For questions or concerns, please contact the Department of Public Works at 954.967.4526.

Land Survey Underway in North Central Neighborhood as part of Safe Route to School Sidewalk Project The Florida Safe Route to School Program helps communities fund projects to improve their transportation needs and encourage more students to walk or bike to school. The Safe Route to School program focuses on children in grades kindergarten through high school with projects that are pedestrians and bicyclists oriented.
As part of the 2016 Safe Route to School Grant Program, the Florida Department of Transportation will be funding approximately $517,000 in sidewalk improvements in the North Central Neighborhood of Hollywood. The reimbursable funds were recently made available for use in this Fiscal Year, and as such, work is now set to begin.
The scope of this project consists of approximately 13,225 linear feet of new 5-foot wide concrete sidewalks to fill in missing links along 26 different blocks of City streets within the North Central neighborhood. The project area is within the proximity of Avant Garde Academy of Broward, Oakridge Elementary School, Beachside Montessori School and Dowdy Field. New sidewalks will be constructed: Wilson Street from 26 Ave to N Dixie Highway Roosevelt Street from N 23 Ave to N Dixie Highway Cleveland Street from N 24 Ave to N Dixie Highway Arthur Street from N 24 Ave to N Dixie Highway Garfield Street from N 26 Ave to N Dixie Highway Hayes Street from N 26 Ave to N Dixie Highway Grant Street from N 26 Ave to N Dixie Highway N 25 Ave from Wilson Street to Johnson Street N 22 Ave from Wilson Street to Hayes Street
The City has hired Bermello Ajamil & Partners (B&A) as consultants for the design of the project. Residents in the North Central neighborhood should expect to see crews from B&A performing topographic surveys of the area. Crews will be working to identify all visible above ground utilities, water meters, fencing, walls, vaults, poles, sidewalks, driveways, and any other asphalt surfaces within and 5-feet beyond the public right-of-way. Crews will also be identifying vegetation and trees greater than 4 inches in diameter within and 5-feet beyond the public right-of-way. Residents should not be alarmed when they see crews working in the area. For questions or concerns, please call Frank Leon, Project Manager, at 954.921.3410, ext. 6033.
