Heavy rains and hurricane-force winds may occur in South Florida, although it is still too soon for forecasters to determine precisely where these hazards will occur. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring this storm, begin making storm preparations, and not focus on the forecast track of the storm's center. The Florida Department of Health in Broward County has confirmed a locally acquired case of West Nile Virus. As a direct response, the Broward County Mosquito Control Section is spraying organic larvicide as part of an integrated pest management approach that also includes public outreach, adulticide application and setting mosquito traps. Residents and business owners are encouraged to survey their properties frequently to remove any standing water in common mosquito habitats such as buckets, tires, planters, bird baths and fountains. By reducing the number of mosquito breeding habitats, residents will reduce the number of adult mosquitoes that could otherwise transmit diseases.
Residents experiencing mosquito problems can request service by calling 311 or by completing the online Mosquito Service Request Form.
