Mask Mandate Enforcement Intensifies

Declining Positivity Rates Are Key To Entering Phase 2 Of Recovery

As the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend approaches, County officials are stepping up their enforcement of the mandate to wear facial coverings in public.

Since March 1, the County has issued more than 1,680 warnings and citations to businesses who have substantiated violations of the facial covering and other operating requirements. As a result, the number of cases, hospitalizations, deaths and the overall positivity rate have declined.

Now, in an effort to keep those trends heading in a positive direction and closer to Phase 2 of a recovery, increased enforcement of violations of the facial covering requirement will be extended to individuals, with potential fines of up to $1,000 for those who are cited. Broward County has established a $100 fine for individuals cited for violation of the facial covering requirement.

The existing authority to enforce facial covering requirements with citations and fines was specifically stated again as part of Emergency Order 20-21, issued on July 8, 2020, as well as multiple other Emergency Orders.
