Web Solution Identifies Unregistered Vacation Rentals

Web Solution Identifies Hollywood's Unregistered Vacation Rentals

Granicus, a leading provider of cloud-based civic engagement technologies and services, has partnered with the City of Hollywood to help manage short-term rental (STR) compliance.

Granicus’ Host Compliance product works by using artificial intelligence (AI) to scan more than 60 STR sites—including VRBO, Airbnb, and FlipKey—to identify property addresses. This provides cities with full visibility into their local vacation rental market, prevents owners from bypassing local regulations, and ultimately streamlines compliance and tax collection. Granicus also offers a 24/7 non-emergency hotline to allow residents to report concerns, like excessive noise, without tying up emergency resources.

“Tourism is a vital industry for our City—but it can’t come at the expense of quality of life for our permanent residents,” said Andria Wingett, Assistant Director of Development Services. “We have a robust, and growing, short-term rental market in Hollywood; monitoring its growth and fluctuation month-to-month is a gargantuan undertaking. We needed a solution that could do the heavy lifting, and help us create a welcoming and safe environment for both visitors and permanent residents.”

Treasury, IRS provide guidance on tax relief for deductions for food or beverages from restaurants

IRS Exception Allows Businesses a 100% Tax Deduction for Restaurant Food or Beverages

The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service has issued Notice 2021-25 PDF providing guidance under the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Relief Act of 2020. The Act added a temporary exception to the 50% limit on the amount that businesses may deduct for food or beverages. The temporary exception allows a 100% deduction for food or beverages from restaurants.

Beginning January 1, 2021, through December 31, 2022, businesses can claim 100% of their food or beverage expenses paid to restaurants as long as the business owner (or an employee of the business) is present when food or beverages are provided and the expense is not lavish or extravagant under the circumstances.
