Work Skills Training Scholarships Available For Eligible Hollywood Residents


The City of Hollywood, in partnership with OIC of South Florida, is offering Work Skills Training Scholarships to eligible Hollywood residents. The 11-week course provides FREE in-depth vocational training, preparing participants for entry-level positions on their career path. Courses will be held on Saturdays through the months of July 16  to September 24, from 9am-4pm at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center located at 2400 Charleston Street, Hollywood FL, 33020.  

CONSTRUCTION OPERATION & WAREHOUSE LOGISTICS  * Saturdays* 9am-4pm 
Upon completion of the course, potential positions and salaries include:

Hand Laborer & Material Mover - $27,710
Packing Specialist - $25,910
Shipping & Receiving Clerk - $29,699

Only those applicants residing within the City's low to moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods may participate in the Work Skills Training Scholarship Program. All submitted applications will go through an address verification process to ensure that participants meet this program requirement. Participants must also self-certify household income and provide proof of their U.S. Citizen or legal resident status.

Broward County Gained 33,400 Jobs in May 2022, a 4% Year over Year Growth and The Unemployment Rate Remained Stable at 2.5%, the Lowest in the Past Decade


Broward County’s job report indicated a 2.5 percent unemployment rate in May 2022. This rate was 2.6 percentage points lower than the region's year ago rate of 5.1 percent. The labor force was 1,055,691, up 29,821 (+2.9 percent) over the year. Nonagricultural employment in the Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Bch-Deerfield Bch Metro Division was 871,700, an increase of 33,400 jobs (4.0 percent) over the year. 
 
“We’re very pleased to see that Broward County’s May unemployment rate remained stable at its lowest level in the past decade, and over-the-year job gains continue. We are confident that the strong interest from companies choosing and looking at Greater Fort Lauderdale as a location of choice and the local expansions in our target industries will continue supporting the overall job growth trends,” said Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance President and CEO Bob Swindell.  “We thank our many partners, investors and leaders at Broward County and our cities, who have been working with us to grow and diversify our economy.”

Data and Analysis


In the month of May, the financial activities (+3,100) and information (+1,400) industries had the third highest annual job growth compared to all the metro areas in the state.
 
The majority of industries gained jobs over the year except for the Education and Health Services industry(-2,800 jobs, -2.5%).
 
Non-Agricultural employment shows a slight overall month to month increase of 0.3 percent, with most industries gaining jobs except for Education and Health Services (-2,100, -1.9%), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (-100, -0.1%), Financial Activities (-100, -0.1%), and Construction (-200, -0.4%).

U.A.E. Projects of the 50 Discussion and Reception 


Join the U.S.-U.A.E. Business Council for a panel discussion on the U.A.E.’s Projects of the 50 with keynote remarks by the U.A.E. Minister of State for Foreign Trade His Excellency Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi. The program will begin at 3 PM on Thursday, June 23rd at The Tower Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and will be followed by a networking reception. The event is being held in partnership with the Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development, the City of Ft. Lauderdale, and the City of Miramar. 

The panel discussion will feature remarks by Afshin Molavi, Senior Fellow at Johns Hopkins University SAIS, and Courtney Nowell, Partner at leading global law firm Morgan Lewis  will cover the impetus behind U.A.E.’s new these reforms in the context of the “competitive game of nations,” as well as the U.A.E.’s reorientation of its foreign policy to put the “economy first."  Courtney Nowell will share practical legal guidance on important legislative and policy aspects of the Projects of the 50, and what they mean for companies looking to do business in the U.A.E.   

Mayor Michael Udine of Broward County, Mayor Dean Trantalis of Fort Lauderdale, and Mayor Wayne Messam of Miramar will share key takeaways from their recent 5-day visit to the U.A.E. and associated opportunities to enhance economic collaboration between the U.A.E. and Florida in particular. In 2021, Florida exported over $1 billion of goods to the U.A.E., making it one of the top 10 states exporting to the Emirates. Florida also imported over $180 million of goods from the U.A.E. that same year.
