The Hollywood Public Works Department is continuing to avail itself of new technology in the 21st
Century workplace. Our strategy includes managing municipal facilities and services with the
assistance of technology. We are constantly implementing new concepts and will continue to do
so in order to provide our residents and customers with the best service that money can buy.
From sprinkler systems that can be controlled remotely, to an energy management system that
can readily diagnose HVAC issues, to the continuing advancement of our alternative fuel program,
to implementation of security measures, to management of resources through computerization,
to the utilization of asphalt recycling equipment, be assured that your Public Works Department
is forging ahead into the 21st century.
Although performing much of our work behind the scenes, it is important to know that Public
Works has been accorded both national and regional recognition. As a Tree City USA for over
20 consecutive years, we have consistently led the way as caretaker of the City’s urban forest.
The American Public Works Association also recognized the department with it’s annual Diversity
Exemplary Practices Award in 2000. The Florida Chapter of the APWA acknowledged our efforts
in 1998 with the Buildings and Grounds Project of the Year Award and again in 2000 with the
Environmental Project of the Year Award. The Florida Urban Forestry Council bestowed
several awards upon the Department starting in 1992 with the Florida Tree City of the
Year Award, and again in 1998 with the Outstanding Public Education Project and finally
in 1999 for Outstanding Ongoing Program – Large County/Municipality. Our Marina was the
first one in South Florida to be accorded the distinction of a Clean Marina Award in 2000
by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. In the same year, the Clean Beaches
Council designated our beachfront as a Blue Wave Beach.
We are proud of our distinctions and proud to serve this great community of Hollywood,
Florida, and provide a level of services that shine as brilliantly as the City known as the
Diamond of the Gold Coast.
Sincerely,
Gregory Turek, Director
Public Works
