Ocean Lifeguard
Under general supervision of a Marine Safety Officer,
Lifeguards are responsible for the surveillance of the ocean and the prevention of emergency situations.
They assist the public in case of emergency, render first-aid to injured patrons and exercise careful watch
over recreational activities, facilities and equipment. Work schedule includes weekends and holidays.
Essential
Functions
Preventing emergency situations; rendering first aid to injured patrons;
Performing ocean rescues; obtaining professional aid in case of serious accident or injury.
Informing the public of the municipal codes as related to beach and water activities;
warning the public of existing and periodic hazards of the ocean and beach.
Requirements
High school diploma or GED. Possession of CPR and First Aid Certification during first year. Must be able
to pass physical test. Must be able to speak and understand English.
Lifeguard Test
Tests for the Lifeguard position are given throughout the year, based on position vacancy.

Run/Swim
The physical test for lifeguard consists of a 500 yard sand run/500 yard ocean
swim (concurrent).
Candidates will run a 500 yard stretch of beach
parallel to the ocean. They will then enter the water, swim around a buoy
15 yards off shore and swim parallel to shore
500 hundred yards (in the opposite direction of which they ran) back to the starting line, where they will turn another buoy
and head to shore. A 15 yard run up the beach (funnel finish) will end the test.
