Making the Beach easier to use and understand has enhanced the cities
image as a family community and a tourist destination. With the City
of Hollywood implementing the following weather information systems it continues to
show a positive approach by allowing the public the ultimate amount of
enjoyment on the beach while maintaining a commitment to public safety.
Flag Warning System
In
1994 Beach Safety put into effect, a "Flag Warning" system. This
color-coded public information system depicts daily water conditions
and hazards, by displaying colored/numbered flags. Informational signs
posted on the back of all lifeguard towers and first-aid stations
assist the public with an explanation of the color-coded system.
This international
system features:
- Simple Symbols
- Four Language (English, Spanish, French & German)
- Numbering System (for sight-color disadvantaged)
Flags will be changed throughout the day when conditions warrant.
Ocean Condition
Weather Phone Line - (954) 921-3334
Beach Safety provides an "Ocean Condition" weather line. This message (recorded approximately 9:00 AM
every morning) announces important marine/weather information for Hollywood Beach for the day. Information
includes:
- Air/Water Temperature
- Wind Direction and Speed
- Tide Times
- Warning Flag Displayed
- Water Visibility
- Presence of Sea Pests
The Ocean Condition Line can be updated throughout the day if warranted.
Lightning
Detection
Florida has earned the reputation as the
lightning capitol of the United States. It is a priority of our
division to not only protect the beach-going public, but our employees as
well. Each year in Florida, over 3000 lightning strikes are recorded
and there are fatalities as a result. As a safety entity of the city
we want to prevent any needless tragedies on Hollywood Beach.
In 1997 we upgraded our lightning protection
of Hollywood Beach by purchasing three hand-held lightning
detectors. The detectors indicate lightning strikes at distances of
3, 8, 20 and 40 miles. These devices which are deployed to cover the
entire beach, have greatly improved our ability to scientifically identify
lightning in the beach are.
Lightning Policy
When the lightning detection device indicates
strikes within a 3 - 8 mile radius, Beach Safety personnel will advise beach
patrons to vacate the water and beach area and seek shelter. Patrons
should return to the beach area only when authorized by Beach Safety personnel.
