Commissioner Beam Furr lives in Highland Gardens and is married to Shelli Edwards, a painter and graphic designer. They have one child, Eliza.
Commissioner Furr moved to Hollywood in 1970 and attended South Broward High School. He was The Top Teen of Hollywood in 1973 and
was active as a student liaison to the Broward County School Board and President of the Student Government. He graduated from Trinity
College in Hartford, Connecticut with bachelor degrees in American Studies and Education. He spent his junior year abroad in Norwich,
England attending the University of East Anglia and went on to receive his Masters at the University of South Florida in Library and Information Science.
Commissioner Furr worked in North Carolina as Director of the Henderson County Hunger Coalition where he helped establish a food co-op for low income families. He also worked as a musician in the early eighties in Boston, Massachusetts before entering the educational field. In 1989, he returned home to Hollywood, Florida and opened up a recording studio in Downtown Hollywood. He went to work teaching in Broward County and presently is the media specialist at Flanagan High School.
An active member of the community, Commissioner Furr has served as Program Chairman for United Neighbors of South Hollywood and on the Community Development Advisory Board. He has also served on the Steering Committee for the City Wide Master Plan, the Broward County Planning Council, the Broward League of Cities, and the School Board Site Selection Committee. He was
Florida's Urban Forest Council's Volunteer of the Year for 2000.
First elected to the Hollywood City Commission in March of 2000 and reelected in 2004, Commissioner Furr has concentrated on the redevelopment of some of the
city's most blighted areas while reducing crime through the use of drug free zones, landlord workshops and new housing. He has worked to foster neighborhood grants, neighborhood specialists, apprenticeship programs, a community tree nursery and a volunteer coordinator in an effort to capitalize on the assets available in our neighborhoods. He was the catalyst for the development of the Local Minority Business Enterprise and Local Small Business Enterprise program.
In 2002, he spearheaded the Hollywood Born to Read program designed to get kids hooked on
reading right from their very first day. The Born To Read Program was instrumental in the City of Hollywood being recognized and honored as an All-American City for 2007.
In his spare time, Commissioner Furr plays both golf and tennis and sneaks in some songwriting from time to time.
