Commissioner Heidi O'Sheehan lives in Hollywood Hills with her husband of more than 20 years, Edward O'Sheehan, a Partner with Shutts and Bowen LLP in Fort Lauderdale. The couple have three children, Evan, Oona, and Isaac.

Commissioner O'Sheehan joined the US Army after high school and spent four years on active duty after which she transferred to the Ohio Army National Guard. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio the same month she completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Commissioner O'Sheehan and her husband moved to South Florida in 1992 where they both continued their military service as members of the Florida Army National Guard. Commissioner O'Sheehan has extensive disaster relief and emergency response experience. She served as the Officer in Charge of the South Area Command Emergency Operations Center providing airport and seaport security after the attacks of 9-11. She also served as Company Commander of the Governor's Outstanding Unit, and commanded that unit during a one year deployment to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Having accumulated over 20 years of decorated service, Heidi retired from the Army in 2005.
