Mr. Benson has been with the City of Hollywood since 1995. He served first as Assistant City Manager, and
then as Deputy City Manager, before being appointed City Manager in
June 2002.
Prior to joining the City, Mr. Benson served as a Senior Planner with the South Florida Regional
Planning Council (1993 - 1995), where he was responsible for the promotion and facilitation of strategic
initiatives to enhance regional economic development in South Florida.
Mr. Benson also served as the Economic Development Representative for the City of Fort Lauderdale
(1988 - 1993), where he developed and implemented economic development programs and activities related
to business development.
Mr. Benson majored in Political Science and received a BA degree from the University of Illinois
in 1985. In 1993 he earned his Masters Degree in Public Administration from Florida Atlantic University.
Also in 1993, he was appointed by former Governor Lawton Chiles and served a four year term on the
Health and Human Services Board of Broward County. In 1997, he and his family established the
Reverend Rufus Michael Mosby Scholarship Fund, named after Mr. Benson's close and dear friend who
passed away in 1996. Scholarship assistance, in honor of his friend, is given annually to outstanding
high school seniors during the Broward County Baccalaureate ceremony. He is active in various civic
and professional organizations.
He and his wife, d'Rene, have three daughters named Siena Sahara, Summer Cyrene and Sia Sage.
