THERE WILL BE NO COLLECTION OF GARBAGE, RECYCLING OR COMMINGLED MATERIAL ON THANKSGIVING DAY OR CHRISTMAS DAY.

Guidelines:

Hollywood offers its residents weekly curbside pick up of recyclables. Residents can help preserve our environment by reducing the amount of waste thrown out and recycling as much as possible. By recycling, residents help the City save money that would be spent on garbage disposal. The monthly charge to a private account for recycling bins is now $1.90/each. The monthly charge to a private account for recycling carts is now $20/each.

Acceptable Material:

Glass (brown, green, blue and clear) food and beverage containers.  Please rinse and remove lids.
Plastics (#1 and #2 only) - soda bottles, milk and water jugs shampoo and detergent bottles. Please rinse, flatten plastics and throw away lids and caps.
Aseptic packaging (milk and juice cartons and juice drink boxes). Please rinse containers and remove lids and straws.
Aluminum and steel cans (no sharp lids). Please rinse.

Keep newspapers together. Put in the blue bin.
the same bin should also be used for magazines, telephone books, office papers and cereal boxes.
Brown corrugated cardboard shipping boxes can be recycled if flattened and cut into two-foot-by-two-foot sections.

Prohibited Material:
   •  Soda cartons
   •  Plastic bags and film
   •  Aluminum foil, pie plates
   •  Any plastics not numbered or numbered 3 and higher
   •  Styrofoam of any kind
   •  Window glass, ceramic glass or mirrors
   •  Plastic toys and microwave containers
   •  Empty pesticide, herbicide, auto fluids and paint containers

The following items are NOT recyclable in your blue bin:
   •  Plastic bags – bring them back to the supermarket. They will recycle plastic bags. We are only able to recycle food and beverage containers, not plastic bags or films.
   •  Plastics not numbered or numbered 3 or higher: Look for the triangle on bottom with a number in it. Only numbers 1 and 2 are recyclable in Broward County. All other numbers are not acceptable in our program. If in doubt, throw it out!
   •  Styrofoam - Check for the number – it’s a #6 and not recyclable in blue bin. Take styrofoam trays and egg cartons to Publix. Most stores have containers near the entrance to the store.
   •  Empty used motor oil, household cleaners, pesticides, bleach and ammonia containers are not acceptable for recycling. Throw these types of containers into the garbage.

WHAT DO I DO IF?

   •  My bin is not picked up as scheduled?
If crews miss your bin, call the Environmental Services Division as soon as you find out at 954-967-4200.
   •  I have too much stuff for just one bin, can I get another?
Just call Environmental Services at 954-967-4200 and request another bin. It will be delivered to you within a week.

Don’t forget to flatten plastic bottles. You may be able to save a lot of room by squashing them before putting them into the blue bin. Remember to put the bin out before 6:30 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING PROGRAM:

It is estimated that by the year 2005 half a million computers and televisions will be discarded in Broward County! This presents an enormous environmental challenge, as many electronics contain dangerous materials such as lead and mercury, that should not be added to the waste stream.

Broward County’s Office of Integrated Waste Management started a pilot program funded through a state grant that allowed residents to dispose of outdated or unusable electronics absolutely free of charge.

Broward County residents may bring electronics to the three locations listed below:

  • Broward County South Trash Transfer Station
    2780 N. Powerline Road
    Pompano Beach , FL
  • Broward County North Trash Transfer Station
    5601 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd
    Hollywood, FL
  • BIC Landfill
    7101 S.W. 205 Avenue (U.S. 27 and Sheridan St)
    Pembroke Pines, FL

Dropoffs may be made every Saturday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The electronics will be demanufactured so that the metals and plastics can be recycled or refurbished, and remaining components will be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

Although there are several local companies that accept used electronics, most do charge a fee. This program will benefit residents by providing a convenient, environmentally-friendly method of disposal at no cost.
