1. Do I need a permit to do landscaping?

New construction requires a landscape sub-permit as an addendum to the building permit. The clearing of a lot for future construction requires an approved, tree removal permit from the Planning Department.

2. How do I apply for an Extended Hours License (E.H.L.)?

The E.H.L. application and checklist is available online and is to be submitted as a package with all the required contents for zoning approval to room 315.

3. How do I apply for the Alcohol License?

The City of Hollywood’s application for alcoholic beverage zoning approval is available in room 103. After completely filing out the form, attach a copy of the Certificate of Use, page five of the State of Florida A.B.T. License application and the establishments food / beverage menu (if the business is a restaurant) and bring the form to room 315 for zoning approval.

4. How long does it take to process the Certificate of Use Application?

Generally, the C.U. application is processed the same day it is applied for and if the application is approved the C.U. permit is given the same day.

5. How long is the Certificate of Use Permit valid?

Most Certificates of Use are issued on a permanent basis. If the business does not move, expand, and change ownership, name or business activity, the Certificate remains valid.

6. How long is the paint permit valid?

Paint permits expire in 30 days.

7. How long is the temporary sign permit valid?

Banner / Balloon signs are valid for 10 days and window sings are valid for 30 days.

8. How long is the tree permit valid?

Replacement is required within 60 days of approval of a permit.

9. Is it a violation to remove a tree without a permit?

An increased permit fee of $90 per tree is the penalty for non-permitted tree removal.

10. What do I need to apply for a temporary sign permit?

The applicant is to attach to the completed application, the Certificate of Use or Business Tax Receipt and a dimensioned drawing of the proposed sign.

11. What gets reviewed by Historic Preservation Board (HPB)?

The Historic Preservation Board reviews all requests for additions to existing buildings, major restoration work or substantial alterations for locally designated historic sites or sites located within a historic district.

12. What gets reviewed by Planning & Development Board (P&D)?

Applications for Variance and Special Exceptions, applications to request for zoning change or land use change, applications to make a request for a text amendment, and to review site plans and architectural design.

13. What gets reviewed by Technical Advisory Committee (TAC)?

All new construction and modifications to existing residential developments, which result in five or more dwellings on a single lot, all new nonresidential developments and existing nonresidential modifications which result in an increase of 11 or more parking spaces.

14. What is the cost of a Certificate of Use?

There is a fee of $100.

15. What is the cost of the Alcohol license?

Alcohol License fee is $75.

16. What is the cost of the E.H.L. license?

The license fee is $1900 with an additional application fee of $2400 for first time applicants and $1800 for renewals; both fees due at time of application.

17. What is the cost of the paint permit?

Paint Permit fee is $15.

18. What is the cost of a tree permit?

The cost is $30 for every tree removed.

19. What is the difference between a C.U. and the Local Business Tax?

The Certificate of Use allows for the occupancy of the structure as well as certifying that the use is permitted. The Local Business Tax is a tax on the business activity. After a C.U. has been issued, you may apply for the Local Business Tax in Room 103.

20. When do I need a Certificate of Use (C.U.) Permit?

A C.U. is required when an industrial or commercial building is erected, altered or enlarged, or an existing building goes through a change of occupant, name or type of business.

21. When do I need a paint permit?

If the commercial structure is located in downtown Hollywood or the Hollywood beach area, Community Redevelopment Agency (C.R.A.) approval is required on two original applications.

22. When do I need a tree permit?

An approved tree removal permit from planning is required for all properties.

23. When does the Planning Board / Committee meet?

Meetings for Planning and Development Board are held the second Thursday of every month at 6:00 pm in room 219. The Historic Preservation Board meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at 4:00 pm in room 219. 24. When would I ask for a variance?

A Variance is needed when you want a specific property exempt from the requirements of a zoning regulation. The development and Review Board shall have the authority to consider petitions relating to variances for all development outside the historic district and historic sites. Administrative Variance may be approved by the Planning & Development Services Director without review by the appropriate board.

25. Where do I get the paint samples?

Any retail store that sells paint can provide a sample that resembles the city’s Sherwin Williams color chart.

27. Why do I need a Special Exception application?

A Special Exception is one which is not permitted by right, but which may be permitted after assessing and addressing potential uses. The purpose of the Special Exception application review process is to allow the Planning and Development Board an opportunity to review such requests, identify issues and impose appropriate conditions to avoid, minimize or mitigate the potential negative impacts .

28. Why would I need a General Application?

A completed general application is required to go before a board to request a Variance, Special Exception or request a Zoning Change, Land use Change, Text Amendment or to have site plans reviewed by TAC and P&D / HPB if applicable.
