associations.

SUMMER YOUTH
PROGRAM (SYP):
The Summer Youth Program commenced in July 2004. Youths made a difference in their
community by picking up trash in the Liberia Neighborhood. The impact of
their participation made their neighborhood in the City of Hollywood a
cleaner and nicer place to live. The youths were awarded with Community
Service Hours for their participation. Additionally, movie passes were
also awarded to all participants.
Beginning in 2005, the Summer Youth Program was enhanced by having youth assist the
elderly, single parents and persons with disabilities by painting and
landscaping their properties. Working together with other City
Departments and local vendors, the Summer Youth Program has changed the
lives of 12 Hollywood families.
Up to 50 students can participate in the program. Each youth must be a City of Hollywood
resident, entering 9th through 12th grade of High
School and be willing to participate in a two week program, consisting
of half days during the week. Availability is on a “first come, first
served” basis.
The highlight of the program is a trip to Disney or Universal Studios for
a day of training in Community Leadership and fun too. Youth are awarded 40
Community Service hours (minimum Broward High School Requirement).
For additional information or a registration packet, please contact Donna Biederman
at (954) 921-3381.
HOMES OF THE MONTH:
The intent of the Hollywood Homes of the Month program is for each Neighborhood
Association to select one house per month within its area that deserves recognition.
The homes nominated take into account the visual impact the home has had on the neighborhood.
NEIGHBORHOOD GAMES:
The “Neighborhood Games” program was created to enhance residential neighborhoods,
both physically and socially, by providing the opportunity to increase membership and
participation in local neighborhood associations, to encourage working relationships among
residents and to promote existing City programs. Neighborhoods partnered and
networked with their own and other neighborhoods to achieve these objectives
for enhancing their community. This initiative was an excellent way to get
seniors and youth working together.
The structure of this program established relationships with residents of all ages
and of different cultures and fostered education, tolerance, and understanding ethnicities.
Many of the Caucasian, African American, Middle-Eastern and Hispanic residents have lived
in the same neighborhood for many years, but maintained that they all relatively
associated only with their own cultures. This program encouraged interracial and
inter-religious friendships by opening lines of communication with structured and
engaging activities. With a City as diverse as Hollywood, Florida, these first steps
are important to sustain a balanced and productive environment.
COMMUNITY GARDEN:
On Saturday, May 2nd, 2009, from 8:00 a.m. until 12 Noon, the Department of Community
Development along with the Highland Gardens Civic Association did a kick off the
planting of vegetable gardens. The event took place at 24th and Adams Street. Utilizing vacant
City property, more than 50 residents and volunteers, including those from other neighborhoods,
participated.
The purpose of this planting project is threefold. First, it will unite neighbors and
establish working relationships; secondly, it will educate and empower residents on how
to plant their own gardens; thirdly, residents will have the opportunity to grow their own
foods, which in turn will become cost effective and healthy.
