Southern Regional
Wastewater Treatment Plant

The City of Hollywood's Southern Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant is an activated sludge treatment plant. A process modification used at this plant is that pure oxygen is used in the system. Wastewater entering the treatment plant flows through a series of units which remove the pollutants before finally being discharged. Two discharge paths exist, one onto additional treatment in the reclaimed water system and a second to the Atlantic Ocean via the ocean outfall. The unit operations and processes provided in the wastewater treatment facilities and their functions are outlined below.

The primary distinguishing feature of this system is that high purity oxygen gas is the source of oxygen for the aerobic biomass in the oxygen trains, as opposed to air as the source in all other modifications of the activated-sludge process.

Unit Operation or Process Function
Screening Remove coarse wastewater solids.
Grit Removal Remove sand, gravel and other heavy inorganic solids.
Influent Pumping Supply the hydraulic energy for necessary to transport the wastewater through the activated sludge oxygenation tanks.
Oxygen Trains Convert finely divided, colloidal, and dissolved organic solids into a settable floc.
Secondary Clarification Separate activated-sludge solids and influent suspended solids from wastewater stream.
Chlorine Disinfection Destruct pathogenic organisms.
Effluent Pumping Supply hydraulic energy for effluent transport through ocean outfall during peak flows and/or high tides.
Non-Potable Water Supply treated effluent for use throughout the treatment process to recycle, and thereby save water.
Reclaimed Water System Provide additional treatment to the effluent to allow the reuse of this water for irrigation on golf courses around Hollywood.
