Fluoridation of drinking water

Fluoridation of drinking water in the United States began in 1945. The City of Hollywood began in 1977. Currently, all public water systems in Broward County are required to practice fluoridation (Broward County Code of Ordinances, Chapter 34, Article V).

Community water fluoridation is supported by most major national and international health service organizations including the:

  • Department of Environmental Protection
  • American Water Works Association
  • American Dental Association
  • American Medical Association
  • American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
