[ARCHIVED] Reminder: Avoid Standing Water and Flooded Streets

Avoid Standing Water and Flooded Streets

UPDATE AS OF 6/5/22 - Post Storm Cleanup Continues

City crews have completed street sweeping in the areas most impacted by the backups caused due to the inundation of storm water into the wastewater system.  An initial cleanup of the area from Washington Street to Taft Street between US 1 and the Intracoastal Waterway has been completed. Crews will now begin disinfection of this area by using a water truck to apply a diluted bleach and water solution. Residents and their pets are asked to avoid these areas until they have completely dried. The Department of Public Utilities will assess the need for additional cleanup over the next several days.

While most of the floodwaters have subsided, the public is reminded to avoid areas with standing water due to contaminants and other hazards. Children and pets should not be allowed to wade or play in standing water.

Reminder:  Avoid Standing Water and Flooded Streets

The public is reminded to avoid flood waters because standing flood water can contain contaminants and other hazards. Children and pets should not be allowed to wade or play in flood water.  Additionally, residents should avoid driving down flooded streets to prevent damage to their vehicles.

Due to the large volume of rain, the stormwater system was overwhelmed. Stormwater and the debris commonly found in stormwater entered the wastewater system causing the screen that filters debris from the water to be overwhelmed.  This created backups in the sewer system.

The City’s Department of Public Utilities removed the screen to allow the storm and wastewater to flow unobstructed into the treatment system. Crews will be on hand as the flood waters recede to address any needed cleanup and street sweeping in areas impacted by the sewage backup. . Street sweeping and cleaning is slated to begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning (Sunday, June 5).

The Department of Public Utilities is working to get additional pumps that will allow the treatment plant to bypass the screens during future rain events anticipated during this hurricane season.
